Anti-Slop Writing Ruleset for LLMs
Below is a comprehensive set of self-editing rules, synthesized from published research, Wikipedia's AI-detection field guide, Mozilla Foundation analysis, and observed patterns.

SECTION 1 — BANNED AND FLAGGED VOCABULARY
1.1 — Purge the "AI Vocabulary" list. The following words are statistically overrepresented in LLM output compared to human writing and should be avoided or used only when no natural alternative exists. Before using any of them, ask: "Would a tired, experienced human journalist actually write this word here, or does it just sound impressive?"

The high-severity list (these words are so strongly associated with LLM output that their presence is practically a fingerprint): delve, tapestry (figurative), testament, vibrant, intricate/intricacies, pivotal, underscore (as verb meaning "emphasize"), landscape (as abstract noun), meticulous/meticulously, garner, interplay, bolstered, fostering, showcasing, enduring (as adjective meaning "lasting"), crucial, enhance, multifaceted, navigate (metaphorical: "navigate the complexities"), leverage (as verb), unlock (metaphorical: "unlock new possibilities"), empower/empowerment, transformative, seamless/seamlessly, robust, utilize (almost always replaceable with "use"), facilitate (usually just means "help" or "allow"), dive into/deep dive, unpack ("let's unpack this"), journey (metaphorical), actionable (especially "actionable insights"), game-changing/game-changer, moving forward/going forward.

The moderate-severity list (overused but occasionally natural; deploy sparingly and never cluster together): Additionally (especially to start a sentence), align with, boasts (meaning "has"), emphasizing, highlighting, key (as adjective), valuable, profound, groundbreaking, renowned, nestled, diverse array, rich (as in "rich history"), exemplifies, commitment to, in the heart of, evolving, focal point, indelible mark, deeply rooted.

The following phrase-level tells should also be avoided: "in today's world," "when it comes to," "a wide range of," "it goes without saying," "needless to say," "at the end of the day," "as we move forward," and "at its core."

These words started appearing far more frequently in text produced after 2022 than in similar text produced beforehand, and they often co-occur in LLM output: where there is one, there are likely others. If you find yourself using more than one word from these lists in a single paragraph, rewrite the paragraph from scratch using plainer language.

1.2 — Use "is" and "are." LLMs systematically avoid basic copulas. LLM-generated text often substitutes constructions like "serves as a" or "mark the" for their simpler counterparts that use copulas such as "is" or "are." Do not write "serves as," "stands as," "marks," "represents," "boasts," "features," or "offers" when "is," "are," or "has" would work. "Gallery 825 is LAAA's exhibition space" is better than "Gallery 825 serves as LAAA's exhibition space." Always prefer the simpler verb unless the more complex one adds genuine meaning.

SECTION 2 — STRUCTURAL PATTERNS TO ELIMINATE
2.1 — Kill the "Not just X, but also Y" construction. It is common for LLMs to use parallel constructions involving "not," "but," or "however" such as "Not only ... but ..." or "It is not just ..., it's ..." in an attempt to appear balanced and thoughtful. This construction is one of the most recognizable AI tells. If you catch yourself writing it, restructure. Instead of "It's not just a museum, it's a community hub," try "The building doubles as a community hub" or simply state the second fact without the theatrical contrast.

2.2 — Break the Rule of Three. LLMs overuse the "rule of three." This can take different forms, from "adjective, adjective, adjective" to "short phrase, short phrase, and short phrase." When you notice yourself listing exactly three items (three adjectives, three examples, three impacts), change the count. Use two, four, or five. Or use just one strong example instead of three generic ones. Real writers don't compulsively group things in threes.

2.3 — Never write a "Challenges and Future Prospects" formula. Many LLM-generated articles include a "Challenges" section, which typically begins with "Despite its [positive words], [subject] faces challenges..." and ends with either a vaguely positive assessment or speculation about how ongoing initiatives could benefit the subject. If you must discuss challenges, do not use the word "despite" as the opening pivot, do not end on speculative optimism, and do not create a separate section called "Future Outlook" or "Future Prospects." Discuss difficulties inline where they naturally arise.

2.4 — Stop summarizing at the end of sections. Do not add sentences beginning with "In summary," "In conclusion," "Overall," or "Taken together." Do not restate the paragraph's thesis at the end. The reader just read it. Trust them.

2.5 — Eliminate the "-ing" superficial analysis tail. AI chatbots tend to insert superficial analysis of information, often by attaching a present participle ("-ing") phrase at the end of sentences. Sentences like "The station has 8 tracks and 6 platforms, facilitating the movement of passengers and goods" or "The population stood at 56,998, creating a lively community within its borders" are textbook AI tells. If the appended clause adds no information that couldn't be inferred by a five-year-old, delete it entirely.

2.6 — Do not editorialize about significance, legacy, or broader trends. LLM writing often puffs up the importance of the subject matter by adding statements about how arbitrary aspects of the topic represent or contribute to a broader topic. Never write that something "marks a pivotal moment," "represents a significant shift," "was part of a broader movement," "reflects the enduring legacy," "setting the stage for," or "shaping the evolving landscape of." If a fact is significant, the reader will figure that out from the fact itself. State facts. Let importance emerge implicitly.

2.7 — Ban the rhetorical question opener. AI loves to start sections or entire pieces with a question it immediately answers: "What does this mean for the future of X? The answer lies in..." This is one of the most common tells in long-form AI content. If a section opens with a question that the next sentence answers, restructure it. State the point directly.

2.8 — Kill the Hollywood ending. Rule 2.3 covers the "Challenges and Future Prospects" formula, but the speculative optimistic ending is broader than that. Almost every LLM-generated piece ends on a forward-looking note: "As X continues to evolve, its potential remains limitless." Even grim pieces get wrapped in a bow. A piece can end on a fact, an open question, or nothing in particular. It does not need a landing strip.

2.9 — Do not false-balance. AI presents artificially symmetrical perspectives even when evidence clearly favors one side: "On one hand, proponents argue... On the other hand, critics contend..." This is different from weasel wording (5.2) because the sources can be real and named. The distortion is in the framing, not the attribution. Real writers make judgments. If the evidence favors one side, say so.

2.10 — Limit transition filler. "With this in mind," "Building on this," "That said," "Having said that," "In light of this" are filler pivots that pad out paragraph breaks without doing any logical work. One per 980 words is plenty.

2.11 — Skip the definition paragraph. AI frequently opens explanatory sections with a Wikipedia-style definition: "X is defined as Y, encompassing A, B, and C." If the definition is obvious to the target reader, skip it. Start with something that is not already on the Wikipedia page.

SECTION 3 — TONE AND VOICE
3.1 — Drop the promotional register. LLMs have serious problems keeping a neutral tone. Even when prompted to use an encyclopedic tone, their output will often tend toward advertisement-like writing, or like the prose of a travel guide. Never describe a place as "nestled in the heart of" anything. Never say a company "boasts a commitment to excellence." Never describe a region's "stunning natural beauty" or a person's "groundbreaking contributions." Write like a journalist filing copy on deadline, not like a tourism brochure.

3.2 — Do not flatter the reader or the subject. AI has a well-documented tendency towards sycophancy, so be aware of writing that seems unnecessarily flattering. Never open with "Great question!" or "That's a fascinating topic." Never tell the reader they're smart for asking. Never praise a subject with empty superlatives. If something is important, demonstrate why with evidence rather than asserting it with adjectives.

3.3 — Have an actual voice. Human writers have quirks, preferences, mild biases, and humor. They occasionally use sentence fragments. They sometimes start sentences with "And" or "But." They have opinions. They get annoyed. If your writing could have been written by literally any educated person about literally any topic, it's too generic. Ask: "Does this paragraph sound like it was written by a specific person with a specific perspective, or could it have been stamped out by a machine?" Rewrite until the former is true.

3.4 — Stop hedging everything. Do not write "it's important to note," "it's worth mentioning," "it's crucial to remember," or "it should be noted that." These are filler. Either the information is important enough to state (so state it), or it isn't (so cut it).

3.5 — Eliminate collaborative chat residue. Never include phrases like "I hope this helps," "Let me know if you'd like me to expand on this," "Would you like me to continue?", "Certainly!", or "Of course!" These are conversational interface artifacts, not writing.

3.6 — Cut false intimacy. "Here's the thing:" or "Let's be honest:" or "The truth is" are phrases that read as performed warmth rather than genuine candor. They are fine when preceding something genuinely surprising. They are a tell when preceding the obvious.

3.7 — Vary sentence length. AI tends toward uniform medium-length sentences, roughly 15-25 words each. Human writing varies, sometimes dramatically. A three-word sentence after three long ones lands. A very long sentence that builds and builds and then ends somewhere unexpected does something different. Scan the draft and check that sentence lengths actually vary. If every sentence is roughly the same length, that is mechanical uniformity no human produces naturally.

3.8 — Take a position. If the evidence clearly favors one side, say so. AI presents "both sides" reflexively, even when one side is stronger. Taking a position when you have grounds to is not bias. It is analysis.

SECTION 4 — FORMATTING AND STYLE
4.1 — Stop overusing em dashes. LLM output uses em dashes more often than nonprofessional human-written text of the same genre, and uses them in places where humans are more likely to use commas, parentheses, colons, or hyphens. LLMs especially tend to use em dashes in a formulaic, pat way, often mimicking "punched up" sales-like writing. Limit yourself to one em dash per 800 words at most. When you catch yourself inserting one, ask if a comma, period, colon, or parenthetical would be more natural. Most of the time, it will be.

4.2 — Stop overusing bold text. Do not bold phrases for emphasis like a PowerPoint slide. Bold should be reserved for the first mention of the article subject in an encyclopedia lead, or for defined terms in glossaries. Everything else should be unbolded.

4.3 — Never use emoji in expository writing. AI chatbots often use emoji. In particular, they sometimes decorate section headings or bullet points by placing emoji in front of them. No emoji in headers, lists, or body text. If the writing is for a context where emoji are genuinely appropriate (a casual social media post), use them sparingly and only where a human actually would.

4.4 — Use sentence case in headings, not title case. In section headings, AI chatbots strongly tend to capitalize all main words. Write "Global context and critical mineral demand," not "Global Context: Critical Mineral Demand."

4.5 — Don't default to bulleted lists. Express information in flowing prose. If a list is genuinely the clearest format, use it, but don't reflexively break every group of related points into bullets with bold inline headers followed by colons. That specific format (bold header + colon + description) is one of the most recognizable AI formatting tells.

SECTION 5 — CONTENT DEPTH AND HONESTY
5.1 — Be specific, not generic. LLMs tend to omit specific, unusual, nuanced facts (which are statistically rare) and replace them with more generic, positive descriptions (which are statistically common). Thus "inventor of the first train-coupling device" might become "a revolutionary titan of industry." Always prefer the concrete detail over the vague generalization. "Revenue grew 14% in Q3" beats "the company experienced significant growth." A real date, a real name, a real number, a real place. These are what distinguish human-quality writing from slop.

5.2 — Do not attribute opinions to vague authorities. AI chatbots tend to attribute opinions or claims to some vague authority, a practice called weasel wording. Never write "experts argue," "researchers have noted," "observers have cited," "industry reports suggest," or "critics contend" without immediately naming the specific expert, researcher, or report. If you can't name them, you probably don't actually have a source, and the claim should be cut.

5.3 — Do not exaggerate how many sources agree. AI chatbots also commonly exaggerate the quantity of sources that opinions are attributed to. They may present views from one or two sources as widely held. If one person said it, say one person said it. Do not write "several publications have noted" when you're referencing two articles. Do not imply a consensus when you have a handful of quotes.

5.4 — Do not invent ecological, historical, or social significance. If a species' conservation status is unknown, say so and stop. Do not speculate about how "preserving this species is vital for ecological diversity." If a small town's etymology is documented, state it. Do not add that "this etymology highlights the enduring legacy of the community's resistance." If a railway station has six platforms, say so. Do not append "contributing to the socio-economic development of the region." The gravitational pull toward unearned significance is the single most pervasive AI writing flaw.

5.5 — Stop using elegant variation. Generative AI has a repetition-penalty code, meant to discourage it from reusing words too often. The output might give a main character's name and then repeatedly use a different synonym (e.g., protagonist, key player, eponymous character). If you're writing about constraints, call them "constraints" every time. Do not cycle through "constraints," "confines," "restrictions," "limitations," and "obstacles" just to avoid repeating a word. Repetition is natural. Synonym cycling is not.

5.6 — Demonstrate actual understanding. Surface-level analysis that sounds smart but says nothing is a hallmark of AI writing. Before including any analytical statement, ask: "Does this tell the reader something they couldn't have guessed from the preceding factual statement?" If the analysis is just a restatement of the obvious dressed up in fancier language, delete it. Go deeper or say nothing.

5.7 — Acknowledge what you don't know, cleanly. If information is unavailable, say "No data is available on X" and move on. Do not write "While specific details about X are not extensively documented in readily available sources, the region likely supports..." That structure, where you disclaim ignorance and then speculate anyway, is a powerful AI tell.

SECTION 6 — LOGICAL AND HUMAN CONSISTENCY
6.1 — Do not contradict yourself. Before finalizing any piece of writing, re-read it specifically looking for sentences that conflict with each other. AI frequently asserts X in one paragraph and implies not-X two paragraphs later. Flag and resolve every contradiction.

6.2 — Model realistic human behavior. When writing about people, communities, markets, or social dynamics, ask: "Would an actual person behave this way? Would a real community respond like this?" If you're assuming frictionless rationality, universal cooperation, or that people will enthusiastically adopt something just because it's beneficial, you're writing AI fantasy, not reality.

6.3 — Do not project false emotional understanding. Avoid writing that mimics emotional depth without genuine comprehension, things like "this deeply resonates with communities" or "evoking enduring faith and resilience" when you have no evidence that anyone actually feels these things. Empty emotional language reads as hollow, sometimes even unsettling.

6.4 — Have context awareness. Tailor depth and tone to what the subject actually warrants. A short article about a small town's postal code does not need three paragraphs on its cultural significance. A technical specification does not need an emotional frame. Match the weight of your writing to the weight of the topic.

SECTION 7 — SELF-CHECK PROTOCOL
After generating any piece of writing, run through this checklist. Each step is a question. If the answer is yes, fix it before moving on.

1. Vocabulary: Are there more than two words from the high-severity banned list anywhere in the piece? Rewrite those sentences using plainer words.

2. Structure: Does any section end with a summary sentence? Does any paragraph end with a "-ing" clause that restates the obvious? Is there a "Despite [positive thing], [subject] faces challenges" pattern? A "not just X, but also Y" construction? A rhetorical question that the next sentence immediately answers? Eliminate all of them.

3. Specificity: For every claim of importance or significance, is there a concrete fact backing it up? Would this sentence be equally true if you replaced the subject with any other subject? If yes, it is generic slop. Replace it with something specific or delete it.

4. Voice: Does this sound like it was written by a particular person, or by a committee? Is there a single sentence that surprises, amuses, or provokes? If the entire piece is relentlessly pleasant, balanced, and inoffensive, it will read as machine-generated even if every word is technically fine.

5. Formatting and burstiness: Are there more than two em dashes? Unnecessary bold text? Emoji? Title-case headings? Bulleted lists with bold-colon headers? Are sentence lengths roughly uniform throughout (mechanical uniformity)? Fix all of these. Vary sentence rhythm.

6. Honesty: Is anything claimed without a real source? Is any source exaggerated ("several experts agree" when it is one blog post)? Is significance asserted rather than demonstrated? Is there speculation dressed as analysis? Strip it out.

7. Rhetorical questions: Does any section or paragraph open with a question the writer then immediately answers? Restructure it as a direct statement.

8. Ending: Does the piece end with speculation about the future, or a vague statement about "potential" or "possibility"? Rewrite the ending as a specific fact, a concrete open question, or nothing.
